Group Therapy

Group Therapy
Addiction grows in isolation. Recovery grows in company. Group therapy is the heart of the ANew program: small, structured groups where you practice new skills, hear your own story in other people's words, and discover that nothing about you is beyond understanding. Our groups are intentionally kept small, so every person is seen, every voice gets time, and nobody disappears in the back row.

Key takeaways:

  • Small by Design

We cap group size on purpose. Personal attention is a clinical tool, not a luxury, and it does not survive a crowded room.

  • Led by Clinicians

Every group is run by a trained therapist working within Dr. Payne's trauma informed model. Structure keeps groups safe and productive.

  • Skills You Keep

Groups teach practical CBT and DBT tools for cravings, stress, and relationships. You leave every session with something usable.

  • The End of Isolation

Shame quiets in honest company. Connecting with people who understand is itself a treatment, and often the turning point.

What our groups look like

A week at ANew includes several types of group, each with its own job. Psychoeducation groups teach how substances change the brain and body, what withdrawal and recovery really look like, and how relapse begins long before the first use. Process groups are where the deeper work happens: guided by a therapist, members speak honestly about what drives their patterns and respond to each other in real time. Skills groups train the practical tools of CBT and DBT, from craving management to conflict, boundaries, and emotional regulation. Relapse prevention groups turn everything into a concrete plan for the situations that will actually test you.

New members often arrive with the same fear: I do not want to talk in front of strangers. That fear rarely survives the first week. Groups are structured, respectful, and led. Nobody is forced to share, interrupted, or put on the spot. And the strangers stop being strangers fast, because everyone in the room is doing the same work for the same reasons.

There is a reason decades of research put group therapy at the center of addiction treatment. Insight can start in an individual session, but it gets tested, practiced, and made permanent with other people.

Frequently Asked Questions About Group Therapy

  • Groups are intentionally small. We keep them well below the crowded sizes common in larger programs, so every member gets real speaking time in every session.

  • No. You participate at your own pace. Listening is participation too, especially in your first sessions. Most people begin sharing when they feel the room is safe, and our therapists build that safety deliberately.

  • Groups mix backgrounds and substances, and that is a strength. Patterns repeat across every kind of addiction, and hearing your own habits described by someone whose life looks nothing like yours is uniquely powerful.

  • Tell your therapist. Confidentiality rules bind every group member, and if a placement ever feels compromising, we move you to a different cohort. Your privacy comes first.

  • Support meetings are peer led and open ended. Our groups are clinical treatment: run by licensed therapists, capped in size, built on a curriculum, and tied into your personal treatment plan. Many clients use both, and they reinforce each other.
