Family Therapy

Family Therapy
Addiction never happens to just one person. It reshapes marriages, parenting, trust, and the daily weather of a home. That is why family involvement is built into the ANew program, not bolted on. Our Family Program helps the people who love you understand what addiction actually is, learn how to support recovery without losing themselves, and begin their own healing, because they have been carrying this too.

Key takeaways:

  • Families Heal Too

Living alongside addiction leaves its own marks: fear, anger, exhaustion, and broken trust. The program treats those wounds directly.

  • Education First

Families learn how addiction works in the brain and why willpower alone fails. Understanding replaces blame, and blame is what keeps families stuck.

  • Practical Tools

Communication skills, boundaries that hold, and a clear plan for hard moments. Support that actually supports, without enabling.

  • Stronger Recovery

Decades of research agree: when families engage in treatment, outcomes improve. Recovery is a team sport, whether or not it looks like one.

How the Family Program works

Family work at ANew happens on two levels. In multifamily education sessions, relatives of current clients learn together: what substances do to the brain, why relapse happens, what recovery realistically looks like, and how the family system either fuels the pattern or helps break it. There is relief in these rooms. Families discover they are not the only ones, and that the confusing things they have lived through have names and explanations.

In family therapy sessions, your own family meets with a therapist to work on your specific situation: rebuilding trust that addiction spent, repairing communication that turned into managing and monitoring, setting boundaries that protect both sides, and saying the things that have waited years to be said. These sessions follow the same principle Dr. Payne brings to all our work: understanding before advising. Families are not blamed here. They are understood, and then equipped.

Participation is always guided by the client’s clinical plan and consent. And when a family member calls us first, before their loved one is ready for treatment, we help them too, because a prepared family is often how a person finally gets here.

Frequently Asked Questions About Family Therapy

  • Whoever stands closest to you. Spouses, partners, parents, adult children, siblings, and chosen family are all welcome. You and your therapist decide who should be involved and when.

  • Recovery does not wait for everyone to be ready. You can complete the full program without family involvement, and the door stays open for them at any point.

  • No. Family sessions have their own agreed agenda. What you share in individual therapy stays confidential unless you choose to bring it into the family room.

  • Yes. Many recoveries start with a family member's phone call. We will help you understand the options and prepare for the conversation that matters.

  • Yes. Multifamily education and family therapy are part of the ANew IOP, included in the standard treatment plan rather than billed as a separate service.
